Review:
Judge, 32nd Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards.
This book is exemplary in its choice of topic. It is unique but still has strong appeal for most readers in its intended genre. All main characters (including antagonists) are unique and fully fleshed out with compelling, layered motivations and traits. Secondary characters are unique and have a meaningful purpose. This book has a unique voice, and the writing style is consistent throughout.
The main character, Denny, has overcome hardships and is a veteran and Native American which may resonate with readers. A unique character and a mystery thriller with a serial killer that will appeal to readers of this genre.
What inspired me to write?
This story came to me over a period of several weeks when I was back in the Navy. I served on submarines and had lots of time to think about what I wanted to do in my later life. Our sub had an internal weekly newsletter, and I submitted a few things. One silly article helped convince the command to change an odd policy. It showed me how an entertaining story can affect people, change their minds, influence change. So, writing became a desire, and this story germinated. Then, my later life got in the way, college, marriage, kids, more Navy, more sea time, retirement, different work, etc. There always seemed to be a reason to be too busy to write. Then I retired again and ran out of reasons. It's funny, Covid helped me. I wrote the first draft of The Musher Man while isolated at home.
What’s next? My next novel, The 4th Cohort, is in its final stages of critique/editing. What’s it about?
Big Oil. Check! Corporate greed. Check! Assassinations and bombings. Check! Beautiful people. Check! Sex. Check! Submarines. Check! Wait. What?
